From reading to action
A practical path through this guide.
Select a step to explore what to do and why it matters.
Make entry understandable
Use persistent labels, required indicators and appropriate autocomplete.
An accessible contact form helps people understand what to enter, recover from errors, and know whether submission succeeded. Visual polish cannot replace labels, useful feedback, and reliable server handling. Test the complete enquiry journey with a keyboard and realistic invalid inputs.
Make the fields understandable
Use persistent labels associated with inputs. Add short instructions where a format or requirement is not obvious. Do not rely on placeholder text as the only label, because it disappears while typing and may be difficult to read.
Mark required fields consistently and ask only for information needed for the enquiry. Choose appropriate input types and autocomplete values. A small form that collects useful context is often easier to complete than a long qualification questionnaire.
Design recoverable errors
Validate on the server even when the browser provides client-side checks. Return specific messages near affected fields and associate them programmatically. Preserve the user's valid entries after a failed submission.
For multiple errors, consider a focusable summary linking to the fields. Avoid moving focus unexpectedly on every keystroke. Announce submission results appropriately without forcing users to discover a small color change at the bottom of the page.
Prevent misleading success
- Disable or guard repeated submissions while processing.
- Give each accepted enquiry a stable identifier.
- Confirm durable acceptance before showing success.
- Handle email or CRM delivery failures through a recovery path.
- Keep sensitive content out of broad error logs.
A success banner should not mean only that an API handler started. If downstream delivery is asynchronous, the system needs responsibility for completing it. Distinguish customer acceptance from internal notification completion in the operating model.
Test the important states
Use keyboard navigation, empty required fields, invalid email, long text, server failure, slow submission, and repeated clicks. Check that focus remains visible and the user can retry without losing the message. Test a narrow viewport and increased text size.
Verify that the received enquiry contains the expected data and source reference. Browser-level success plus destination reconciliation provides stronger evidence than either alone. Keep a monitored fallback contact method visible when the form is business-critical.

A few practical answers
Frequently asked questions
Why are placeholders insufficient as form labels?
Placeholder text disappears during entry and may be difficult to read. Use persistent associated labels and short instructions for required formats or unusual fields.
When should a form display a successful submission state?
Only after the promised acceptance step actually succeeds. If delivery continues asynchronously, provide a recovery owner and avoid implying the email or CRM action already completed.
