From reading to action
A practical path through this guide.
Select a step to explore what to do and why it matters.
Identify the affected experience
Separate content appearance, interaction delay and layout movement.
Prioritize Core Web Vitals work by identifying which user experience is slow or unstable and which pages affect the business most. A single lab score does not describe every visitor. Combine repeatable local diagnostics with real-user evidence where available.
Understand the three experiences
Largest Contentful Paint concerns the appearance of the main visible content. Interaction to Next Paint concerns responsiveness to user interaction. Cumulative Layout Shift concerns unexpected visual movement. Google's Web Vitals guide defines these metrics and their measurement context.
Group pages by template and journey. A blog article and a product listing can have different bottlenecks. Start with a high-traffic or conversion-critical template so an improvement benefits meaningful usage rather than only a synthetic demonstration page.
Diagnose before optimizing
For slow content appearance, inspect server response, resource discovery, image size, and render-blocking dependencies. For slow interactions, inspect long tasks, expensive handlers, and unnecessary rendering. For layout movement, inspect missing dimensions, delayed content insertion, and font behavior.
Change one meaningful variable at a time and compare traces under consistent conditions. A faster network in the second run can make an ineffective change look successful. Document the device, viewport, throttling, and route used for local comparisons.
Rank the opportunities
- Fix missing dimensions on large visible media.
- Ensure important content resources are discovered promptly.
- Remove or defer unnecessary third-party work.
- Reduce expensive interaction processing.
- Review shared layout and component costs across templates.
Choose from measured evidence rather than treating the list as a universal order. A site dominated by a slow external chat script needs a different first fix from one serving an oversized hero image.
Verify the business journey
Retest menus, forms, galleries, and filters after performance changes. A deferred script that breaks consent handling or an enquiry form is not a successful optimization. Confirm visual quality and accessibility at the same time.
Monitor field evidence over an appropriate period after deployment. Lab traces help explain causes; real-user measurements show whether the change benefits actual traffic. Keep a small performance budget for newly added widgets so future features do not quietly undo the improvement.

A few practical answers
Frequently asked questions
Should every Core Web Vitals issue receive the same fix?
No. Slow main content, delayed interactions and shifting layout have different causes. Diagnose the relevant route and interaction before selecting an optimization.
Can a faster performance score still represent a worse website?
Yes. Deferring a script may break an enquiry or required control. Retest the business journey and visual usability alongside performance measurements.
